When I first saw this I thought it was a modern photo, but looking closer it is an old photo that has been tinted and very nicely too.

Some of the men who built Liverton village hall includes the vicar of Liverton Rev.P.J.S. Russell 5th fom left. Angela Cockburn tells us: ”The man in the pale trousers at the front second left is my grandfather John Cockburn (known as Jack)who lived at Petches Cottages at the time.” Do you know the names of any of the other men? Fred Brunskill advises us: ”The Greek steamship Taxiarchis struck the Westscar rocks during the afternoon of January 14th, 1952 I remember watching the five tugs brought from the Tees as they tried to refloat her. Although the weather had been calm when she became grounded, worsening gales proved too much for the hull and she was holed beyond repair. the 28 crew were taken off by local fishermen and she ended up on the beach opposite the Coatham Hotel. She was eventually dismantled for scrap by Thomas Ward’s of Sheffield.” Thanks to Fred for that information. |
