<p>This aerial view of Staithes was taken from over the sea  in 1952/3.  The old village looks much the same as we know it today, except for the railway viaduct dominating the valley.  The Cod and Lobster looks odd, being so dark and not white. </p>

<p>A photograph of Staithes Viaduct, taken from the landward side, I think, showing a 5 coach train travelling towards Whitby, headed by a large tank engine (possibly an A8 (4-6-2T) or maybe a BR Standard tank (2-6-4T) &#8211; or even a Thompson  L1 tank (2-6-4T)  &#8211; thanks to Mark Thompson).</p>
<p>What a remarkably scenic railway this was – nowadays it would be the ideal candidate for preservation – pity Dr. Beeching never thought about that!</p>

<p>Staithes Viaduct, with a local commuter train, powered by a British Railways &#8220;Standard&#8221; tank engine.  This photgraph was probably taken towards the end of the lines existence, a two carriage train indicating the decline of rail traffic as increased fares and better road links caused migration away from the railways.</p>
<div>All that remains now are the concrete piers that supported the steelwork.</div>
<div>In view is the stone abutment which supported the west end. The east end abutment, also of stone, was demolished.</div>

<p>Staithes branch of the Loftus Co-op in 1908. Following comments, I feel certain this is at Staithes. Derick Pearson notes that the blue flint bricks create a different pattern to cobbles. Julie Riddiough points out that Loftus did also have cobbles. But the sign indicating chapel, is a clear indication that this is Staithes. Thanks to all contributors for their assistance.</p>

<p>The Life Saving Company were responsible for rescues from the shore, firing a line to a vessel in distress.  Other ropes and pulleys were then hauled out to the vessel and the crew brought ashore one by one.  They would be the forerunners of the Coastguard Auxiliary Service.</p>

<p>The wave after the wave that wrecked The Cod and Lobster?  Another extremely dynamic image of the storm - I bet the photographer sold the seventh wave image to the North-Eastern Gazette!</p>
<p>(There&#8217;s an old fisherman&#8217;s saying that the seventh wave is the highest when the tide comes in - I used to spend ages on Redcar beach counting waves as a result of this!)</p>
