A fine image of an old tradition, from the late 1950’s/early 1960’s, this lasted until the late 1970’s, being taken over by the Skinningrove Gala Association. It lasted until the late 1980’s.
The photgraph includes several members of Colin Hart’s family. The boat featured belonged to his grandfather and was used each year to transport the Gala Queen through the village to the Boatman’s Hut which is situated just before the bridge leading to the beach. In later years the boat was replaced by a flatbed lorry.

This is Jim Tinn perusing Skinningrove Junior School’s portfolio on the General Election. Were you one of these students – if so identify yourselves, or identify some of the others!

This is the wedding of Edward Isaac Money (Ted) and Caroline Smith (Carrie). Far left is Charles Powell Smith the bride’s brother, Nan Page friend of the bride, Ted and Carrie, Mary Smith niece of the bride and Jonathan Smith (Jonty) brother of the bride and father of Mary.
The wedding took place at St. Helen’s Church Carlin How on the 11th November 1932, the couple then lived at Skinningrove before moving to East Loftus after being bombed out of their house in Skinningrove during in the second world war.

A well photographed place Skinningrove, but a nice clear photo, showing the houses and the works.

As Raymond says:
”This one is of Skinningrove Valley circa 1963. The old track bed of the line to Loftus/Whitby can be clearly seen with the track lifted from the BR closure (well before it was re-laid for CPL) and in the distance the pair of old Gas holders at Skinningrove. Note the lack of trees that now obscure this view.”
The concensus of opinion is that this is the first junction of the zig-zag, with the ’tail’ of the first section coming off the photo at the bottom (originally to run under the viaduct, but after the viaduct was in-filled, stopping short just before) – thanks Colin and Russ – rodders

Well I don’t know what is happening here, looks as though the boys have been busy and they are left to right,
Eric Rowe, John Winspear, George Wilson and Norman Trattles.
This is the last photo I have been loaned of the pantomimes in the Institute, unless of course you have some we can borrow, if so take them or any other old photos of people and places in and around Loftus, into the library at Loftus where they will be copied and handed back to you.
Thank you.

Here we are again, oh yes we are, it’s pantomime season again at Skinningrove Institute, don’t know what the boys have done wrong, but it looks like they may be being arrested by Sheila Magor the police woman, the boys are :-
George Wilson, ? Frampton, Eric Rowe, John Winspear, Norman Trattles.

Once again at the pantomime in Skinningrove and the sailors are,
Norman Trattles, Eric Rowe, George Wilson, John Winspear. Where are you now sailors?

Yes take a very close look at these little Dutch girls- or are they? No they are little Dutch boys, taken at one of the pantomimes in the Institute at Skinningrove I think in the 1950’s.
The boys (L to R) are, Laurence Smith, John Winspear, Eric Rowe and Alec Cuthbert, I don’t think any of them grew up with an inferiority complex, don’t blame me for the photo I was lent it by one of the boys. Sorry gentlemen.
