Skelton – Cross Green & Duke William Early 1900’s

Skelton - Cross Green & Duke William Early 1900's

An interesting view of Skelton Cross Green, without the small park and War Memorial now situated beside the modern day traffic lights.

Interestingly the large double-fronted shop stood until the end of the last century, when demolition created the space we now see next to the Duke William pub!

Are these men coming off shift or going on?  No safety helmets, so we can surmise it’s before the mid 1930’s.

The caption on this photo says ’Mine horses  out to graze during holidays near Claphow, North Skelton mine in the backgound.  So who am I to argue?

The other side of Skelton High Street, on a lovely sunny day as the shades outside of the shops prove.  The Halfpenny Bridge at Saltburn can just be seen in the distance.

We don’t have many photographs of Skelton, it’s a pity this one has a mark down it, but lots have turned out to see the man with the camera.

Skelton and Loftus

A duet of images from the book of views of Loftus.

This shows the imposing Parish Church at Skelton in the upper image and Loftus Railway Station in the lower image – two more diverse views I couldn’t imagine!
