Yes I know we have this one but I thought it is rather a different view of the church looking at it from the side rather than the front.

Before and After

Before and After

Do you remember when Harrop’s chemist looked like this?  Wish I weighed as much now as I did on those scales.

Thomas Harrop was born in 1914 and educated at Guisborough Grammar School, he served a five year apprentice at Prosser’s 10 Zetland Road, (do you remember that shop, where Breckon and Shaw’s is now?) He qualified in 1939, marrying in 1940 he opened the chemist’s in 1957. Sadly Tom passed away in 1980 the shop then was owned by Mr Ray Silver, who served the people of Loftus for many years..

Thank you Ray for all that information.

A Local Wedding

A Local Wedding

Two local people after their wedding in the early forties, taken outside Loftus Police Station.

Thanks to Ray Brown for the location. John

This wedding, between Dave Smith of Coronation Street, Carlin How and Maisie Rowland of West Road, Loftus took place on 7 August 1948 – not in the early forties as stated. The ceremony was held in the Congregational Church and, since there is no frontage to speak of, the photographs were taken, as Ray says, outside Loftus police station. The bride’s guardians , Tom and Nellie Steyart, were close friends of Frank Watson the Police Inspector in charge.

Bridesmaids:-  Mrs. R Johnson, Miss P. Tyreman, Miss T.R. Mintoft, Miss J. Baxter, Miss E. Money.

Best Man Mr Frank Liddiard.         Ushers Mr G. Rowland,  Mr. J.R.Mintoft

Officiating clergy Rev. Maurice Clegg.

Thanks for all that information Brian I have posted all the names you sent

St. Peters Church, Brotton

St. Peters Church, Brotton

An image of the old St. Peter’s Church in Brotton, demolished about 1958 – all that’s left now is the plinth on which it stood (near to the graves of its priests).

A little more information has come to light in an extract from a booklet “Know your Parish” it states:-

“When St Margaret’s was built St. Peter’s became the mortuary chapel, this chapel was cleaned & restored in 1901 but was demolished later. When the workmen removed some large flagstones near to where the altar had stood they discovered a tunnel which had been bricked up some time in the past. The registers commence in 1641, baptism to 1881: marriages to 1901 and burials to 1956″.  (thanks for that information Ray – rodders)
