Loftus – Zetland Road

Loftus - Zetland Road

Frederick W. Bothroyd – Watchmaker and Jeweller -  5 Zetland Road, Loftus is listed in the 1901 Census, but not in 1891. Jayne tells us: ”The image is of Frederick William Bothroyd standing proudly in his shop. His brother Herbert Bothroyd shared the premises and operated a cycle shop, hence the tires in the front window. F.W. Bothroyd set up his watchmaking/jewellery business at Loftus in c1890 on the High Street. He moved premises to Zetland Road by 1894, first at 27 Zetland Road and then at 5 Zetland Road until 1914.”  This image possibly dates from the mid 1890’s. This is based upon records which indicate he married in 1892 and by 1901 had three children, the eldest being Richard 6 years of age. The site is now occupied by a cafe and amusement arcade. Interesting that the next door way to the right of the image leads to ”refreshment rooms”.

Leng’s Window Dressing

Leng's Window Dressing

Thanks to Mrs. S. Dohring for this photograph of her uncle’s shop window, dressed for the coronation of king George VI in 1937.  The shop was at 32, Zetland Road, Loftus.

Tyne House

Tyne House

That is what it says on the back of this photo and Tyne house was at East Loftus with the shop of Mr C Jones next to it. No I do not remember it as it is dated 1906 and I am not quite that old.  But after visiting there today I think the shop is number 1 Tyne Street, anyone any different ideas?

Fred at the Shop

Fred at the Shop

Frederick William Bowers, Harry’s son, is standing in the doorway of the shop at No 1 Tees Street, East Loftus.  Fred was born in 1916, so the photo was probably taken in the late 30s.

I’m pretty certain that this is the shop which was run by the Misses Amy Thurlow and Florence Fletcher for a while in the late 1940’s early 1950’s. Amy Thurlow was raised at Boulby Barns and her family feature in several photographs on your site. As close friends of my mother, Misses Thurlow and Fletcher were both known to me as “Aunty”. I recall that at the time they owned the shop, the accommodation above it was occupied by the Brown family (Mother, daughter whose name I forget and son Colin)

Thank you Owen for the above information I remember the shop when it was owned by Thurlow and Fletcher.

Whitby Road

Whitby Road

Another shop in East Loftus this time on whitby Road, this photo is dated 1907 and although I do not remember these people I do remember Ogden’s having this shop in the 1940’s and then I think Blaylock’s took it over. Do you remember it?

Hasn’t changed much has it? Only the name of the butchers has changed a few times over the years.

Meadow Dairy – Loftus

Meadow Dairy – Loftus

Meadow Dairy stood as the photograph interpretation tells us was ajacent to the present day Post Office, lately occupied by a Tattoo Parlour and next to the Bite To Eat (sandwich and snacks shop).

The Manager (in 1924) is identified as Mr Joe Anderson; he is flanked by two assistants, one of whom is known to be Miss Elsie Burton. Unfortunately the other young lady is unknown. Can anybody help in identification?

Loftus Post Office

Loftus Post Office

Not as we know the post office today, at this time the post office stood quite a way back from the road, where the cafe stands now, opposite the Town Hall.  So by photographs we know that the post office has been in at least three different locations in Loftus.

Although the building is still there we don’t see it looking like this any more.

Loftus Co-operative Store

Loftus Co-operative Store

Loftus Co-operative Store in the days of long white aprons, no checkouts and no pre-packaged produce!  I don’t suppose anybody knows any of these immaculately turned out shop assistants?
