An outing from the chapel, George Tremain tells us: ”After some research I now believe I can identify some of the members of this group. On the back group standing 3rd in is Charles Hall, 5th fron left with moustache is Joseph Easton and with her arnm linked to his I believe is Emily Jemson his step grandaughter. Second from the right standing is Priscilla Easton who had formerly been Priscilla Jemson ubntil her husband William Jemson was killed in a mining accident. Second row from the front 3rd from the right as you look kneeling is Mary Jemson kneeling. There are also other members of the Hall/Jemson family on the photograph as all seemed to have strong links with the church. Fred Nicholson, crouching at front on far left. He married Clara Hall. Worked as deputy in ironstone mines but then started his own business with Mr Petty.(Nicholson and Petty). The photograph must be somewhere around 1910-20.”

Ray Brown tells us:”I cannot help with the date or reason for the parade, but I can help with a few Names, Leading the Band Is Arthur Stone (looking at him I would say the picture may have been taken in the mid 50 to early 60s) front row far right is Henry Rawlins, front row far left I think is Jimmy Bushby, third row far right is Colin Limon & the Back row far lift is Malcolm Voden all the names provided helped both Loftus county modern Brass band and later, when formed the Loftus Town Band.”

Note the fish creel in the right foreground.

Does anyone know the date of this photograph?

William Halton (watchmaker in Loftus – of Halton’s Jewellers shop) was born in 1869. His younger brother Arthur Halton was my grandfather, who worked at Loftus Railway station.
If it is the same William Halton, then it could be between 1900/10 when he would be 30-40. However his own father was also a William Halton born in 1837.

This information came from Pauline Dolling and as William Dart was born about 1890 then I think her estimation of the date will be about right.

Pondarosa was originally sited at the end of Marine Terrace (nearest to the steel works), being notable for the old doors used in it’s construction, the grape vine growing at the allotment and the use of old Co-op tin biscuit tin racks as hen laying boxes. All materials were salvaged from one place or another, or off the beach. Peter Kennedy to whom it belonged, moved the allotment from Cliff Street, but later owing to subsidence moved to up near Ridley Terrace on Carlin How Bank.

The children would compete at singing and bible reading while judges would listen but not watch, then give scores to each person.(was this the the forerunner of X factor)

Handicraft, handwriting, painting and sewing were also judged with points for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd places. This was usually held at Deepdale Chapel which had a large room. There was also a choir competition and Skinningrove won both sections that year with the songs ‘At the Name of Jesus’ and ’Holy, Holy, Holy’ (I can still remember the tunes). At the end of the competition all points won were added together and the chapel with most points won the shield. The year was 1967 or 68?”.

Yes take a very close look at these little Dutch girls- or are they? No they are little Dutch boys, taken at one of the pantomimes in the Institute at Skinningrove I think in the 1950’s.

The boys (L to R) are, Laurence Smith, John Winspear, Eric Rowe and Alec Cuthbert, I don’t think any of them grew up with an inferiority complex, don’t blame me for the photo I was lent it by one of the boys. Sorry gentlemen.

Two gaffers enjoying a smoke and a yarn outside Timm’s Coffee House in Skinningrove after coming off shift. Now known to be Bill (Drummer) Wilson on left and ? Roe. A rather grand name for a working class pub, but one that has stuck – it is the only pub in the village, the Working Men’s Club and Institute having ”gone to the wall” some years ago.

Notice the low-level hatch for beer deliveries and the ornate gate posts – Timms Coffee House was used as a coffee house. in the 18th century it was a luxury item and quite expensive. It was where the gentry of the time would meet. The building was built by Tim Maynard’s father in law John Easterby M.P. to replace the Old Hall, the present day Post office.

Thanks to Kim, Colin Hart and John Kennedy for updates and names.

This image which I’ve assumed to be of a father and son, is either a lucky accident by the photographer or a photograph that shows considerable skill.

The father, on a dominant point in the picture, draws the eye – which is then directed to the child by the father’s gaze. A very poignant picture of a fisherman and his son – but Paul Clarke advises us: ”The man in the photo is my late father Eddie Clarke, and the boy is Keith Simpson. The boat was owned by my father and later went on to get the boat ‘Boy Paul’ built at Sandsend. This photo appeared in and was taken by a photographer from The Northern Echo in about 1961-1963”.

Thanks to Stephen Steyert and Paul Clarke for the missing information.)
