Ryan’s shop situated in the Market Place, managed it is believed by Mr Robert Graham who features in the image. Robert Graham lived in ”Tin City” at Boulby and arranged a petition (Robert’s letter presented the petition to The Minister of Health (in London) to prevent the demolition of the village by Loftus Urban District Council in 1935. This image could well date from this time.

We think that this is a photograph of Hebditch’s builders, but we can’t place the terrace of houses that they are working on.

Charles Hebditch came from Scarborough. He built the Congregational Chapel in 1906 followed by the houses on the South side of West Road, between the garage and West Park Avenue. In 1911 he was living in one of them, Briardale, with his family.

He bought the land on which nos. 20 to 25 Cliff Crescent stand in 1908 and the houses were completed in 1909. At that time he was working in partnership with Theodore Wilcox, another builder from Scarborough. He also built many other houses in and around Loftus.

Can anyone help us with more details. When and where was the photograph taken?

This Photo shows the Money family in the 1920’s ( I think) what the family gathering was for I do not know but it shows all the Money’s,

from L toR :- Edward Isaac (Ted), Margaret (Meg), Violet (Vi), Ivy, John (Jack), Louisa (Lou), William (Will), Florence (Flo), James Verrill (Jim born before marriage)

Mary, William Tyers, (father) Mary Ann,(mother) known as Polly, Sarah (Sal).

William Money came to the Loftus area from Barrowby in Lincolshire between 1871 and 1881 with his wife Mary and his sons, William Tyers aged 20, John Henry 15 and Edward 13. ( taken from the 1881 census) They came here for the work in the ironstone mines and before their arrival there were no other Money’s in this area that I can find, please correct me if you know better. Edward moved to Bishop Auckland (1891 census) and John Henry emigrated to Australia married and had a family there. So most people named Money in this area came from someone in the above photo.

I have been checking my file and it shows that William Money and Mary Ann Verrill (yes a Verrill from Staithes) were married in 1887 so I think the photo would be on the anniversary of their 40th wedding anniversary in 1927. Can you believe that in 1911 (as shown on the 1911 census)that William, Mary Ann and 10 of their children were all living in 28 St Hilda’s Terrace Loftus, how did they manage? I bet they were glad when their children got married and they had the house to themselves to live out their retirement in.

How about this for a guess? Picture taken outside 34 Hartington Street! Could be Norman there or St Hilda’s Terrace.

An awful lot of children here, from the very small to the almost adult.

The non-conformist churches, in general, were more philanthropic than the orthodox church and organised events which encompassed their whole congregation. In this case all of the children would have been driven up here (possibly on the back of farmers’ wagons, although by this time possibly even in a charabanc or motor bus) and treated to a picnic in one of the local farmer’s fields. Games and competitions, usually with prizes, would ensue and in the late afternoon all would return home again happy and sleepy (all except those who never won a prize, perhaps!).

My mother used to tell me of similar events that she had participated in (funnily enough she was christened into the Congregational Church), she always spoke of them with fond affection.

Do you remember seeing Charlie in Loftus? (not telling whether I do or not as it will give my age away) Here he is the day before his retirement with him is W (Buzz) Havelock, Gerard Readman and C E Bibby the town cleaners.

Pat Sparkes recalls: ” I remember Charlie the dust cart horse, he was very partial to bread and all the children use to go out to feed him bread, one day my brother went out as usual with our bread eating an apple and charlie refused the bread and ate his apple. He went home eating the bread.”
