A Picture postcard of the Biott Family in 1912, Kathleen Kelly great granddaughter of the Biotts tells us: ”The girl in the picture is Constance Irene L Biott, Charles and Annie Biott were her grandparents who raised her. Constance was born in Carlin How in 1902.” The 1911 census records the family living at 4 Furnace Cottages, Carlin How. Annie Biott as age 67 who had 7 children (5 living and 2 dead). Charles Biott age 65 (Fish merchant).

The Biott family ran a Fish and Chip business in a building adjacent to The Tivoli Theatre. Amazingly it survived unscathed when The Tivoli burned down! They must have achieved a measure of fame!

This is a photo of Miss Carlin How on the 6th of August 1951. Miss Carlin How is Sylvia Conway. To Sylvia’s right on back row is Bob Welford the coalmans daughter, possibly called katura, little girl front left dont know, next right with glasses is Kathleen Welford another daughter of Bobs, next right back row not sure, little girl directly in front is Pat Pearson, to her right is David Husband and directly behind and between these 2 is Ronnie Gittings. To Davids right front row is Alfie Arnold and to his right Brian Husband, Davids twin brother who went to Australia many years ago. The tall lad on the back row is John Scott. Thanks to Frank Robson for the update.

These events like Gala day and Carnival Queen were generally held on the football field but hope someone can confirm this one as I don’t recognise the background with the house showing behind the fence to the left, although it could have been around no 13 or 14 Bells Huts where the foundry now is.

This was the year that Albert Einstein published all of his famous works on relativity and also the year that the title of Prime Minister was created (not a lot of people know that!) – the band appear to be practicing, as there are not many onlookers. Derick Pearson has put these photos of parades in Carlin How Square in order for us and this is what he says about the one above.

”c1905… notice the White Pit Chimney in between the houses down the road on the way out of the square to Loftus. Note also on the FRONT fence of Front street (not the dividing ones) Just behind the band to the left, that they are narrow ZIG ZAG railings. Not straight wide ones. This will become relevant on the other photos.”

Boy Scouts, a lot of people in fancy dress and the band pose for a picture in Carlin How.

When was it and what was the occasion?

c1919. Taken from the upstairs in the Maynard arms. Note the upstairs’ windows on the shops to the seventh window again. This time all the shops below to the right are all joined up and belong to the SKINNINGROVE AMICABLE INDUSTRIAL SOCIETY OF CARLIN HOW. Porritt’s shop was owned by the same company too.

Note also the railings on the Front fence of front street….They are now wide railed, straight up and down fencing. No ZIG ZAG rails in sight. This is odd as they were now back like they were when first built.

Note also that the third shop from the left is still T WEBSTER’s. Note also the White mine Chimney has now gone.

Note pavements were fully flagged too.

Thanks to Derick Pearson for the dating of this photo and the new photo.

I have been asked if the date was right on these images of the Street party for Charles & Di’s wedding – well my records say its right for the images, the rest of the world says its the right date – so to those who think they know better, we better alter the history Books!!!!!

This young fella got a trike before I did – I was about 8 when I got my first bike! My gran used to wear a smock as well!

Where was the image taken – and which Brian Harrison is it – oh and what was the name of his gran (I just know I’m going to regret this!)?

Rita Beckham tells us: ”This photo was taken outside the front of Lax Street, where the brick air-raid shelters stood. Mrs Harrison can’t remember her first name (she had three children, youngest is Billie, Minnie the sister in the middle, Brian the eldest boy married & lived in Guisborough) and lived at no 32. We lived at 31 in a two up & two down; there were six children, mam, dad and gran. Next door down at no 30 was Lizzie and George Bilham, then at no 28 there were the Tinklers, at no 26 Ruby Campbell and family. Sure if I had time I could remember the rest of the residents of the street.”

Thanks to Rita for the update.

This local beauty (top left) is none other than Nellie Porrit, who owned the shop in Carlin How square (used to be the Skinningrove Amicable Society many years before). Nellie was photographed by many and is even on some photos with some of the ex-actors who performed at the Tivoli Theatre.
Nellie’s husband Reg who was a United bus driver for amny years is pictured beside her. Nellie was 100 years old when she died, the shop having been run for many years prior to her death by her daughter Betty Pennock. Others in the photgraph could include Tom Thornton (Nellie’s brother) who also had a shop in Grovesnor Terrace.
Many thanks to Derick Pearson for the information. John

Carts/traps were hired out by the landlord of the Maynard Arms, there was in early days a coach house behind the Maynard Arms.

The shop at the extreme left of the picture is part of the Skinningrove Amicable Society Ltd, where miners/steelworkers could exchange tokens for goods. Latterly this became known as Porrits shop, being run by Nellie and then her daughter Betty Pennock. The shop to the right is Richlou’s: Post Office, Printers and Photographer (producing Richlou Typo Postcards for many years). Later continuing as a Post Office being run by Ivy Bassendale. The altered house in between was at one time Websters Barbers Shop. Interestingly the horse and trap are standing exactly where in later years the United buses bust stop was placed, when buses ran through Carlin How Square.

Thanks to Derick Pearson for names already on the image! It should make it easier for someone to name the rest then! What was the origin of the flower festival in Carlin How? It can’t have been the original druidic virginal procession, despite the white robes – was it Die Neue Kultur, like Morris Dancing and Sword Dancing – re-invented by the Victorians and Edwardians as the industrial culture replaced the pastoral culture of old?

I absolutely love this picture – it wasn’t just Sutcliffe who preserved history. Joseph Edward Huntrod’s photograph freezes a moment in time which in its day would have been regarded as hum-drum, every girls Monday nightmare. This is before the days of washing powder and detergents, the only whitener was the blue!. The bonnet and the apron were everyday requirements for a girl who was expected to wash, ’poss’ the clothes and peg them out and then look fresh and clean to wait on her mistress or master – they saved the clothes from wear and dirt. She would have been up at about 4 in the morning fetching and boiling the water to do the wash.

Julie Riddiough says: ”This woman is Mrs Rachel Ann Huntrods (nee Park) she was the wife of Joseph Edward Huntrods the photographer that lived in Errington Street, Brotton, He also opened the first picture house in Brotton and later moved to Eldon nr Bishop Auckland (where Rachel was from) to open a picture house there with her brother.” – So it wasn’t just Sutcliffe who used his family as props and models in his photography!

When I was a youngster I can remember helping my mother to poss clothes – not with a dolly like this, but with a copper contraption on the end of a pole and we were fortunate to have a gas fired poss-tub as well! – posh in our house we were! You slept like a log afterwards though!

This young lady looks rather shy to me. Can anybody name her. The school looks like a Poor Law School with strict segregation of boys and girls. Was it a symmetrical building with an entrance at each end? I bet you had to queue to go in – I’m getting a cold feeling down my back as I remember queuing to enter Dormanstown Infants school – boys at one door and girls at the other, the classrooms weren’t segregated in my day though (although I do have a memory of blast tape running corner to corner on each window pane! (1951)).

Believed to be another picture of the 1937 celebrations we saw in another post, the metalled roads help with this dating. Sea Scouts feature in the picture and their uniforms are appropriate to 1937. It is believed that the gentleman with the bicycle is named Brown, can anybody help with that or other identification.. All part of the busy community life that was experienced in many of the communities in East Cleveland.

This would be George VI then I presume as Edward didn’t make it to his Coronation (some affair of the heart I’m told!). Interestingly though it took place on the same day that Edward was supposed to have his Coronation – I suppose they’d got the Abbey booked and couldn’t cancel!

They certainly knew how to celebrate in those days though!

c1937 show the same scene as the other photo with the same name, if one looks at the shadow of the chimney pots on the shop roofs you can be certain they were taken on the same day and within minutes of one another. When zoomed in you can see even the people looking out of the windows above are the same people. I have the date on these as 1937 as that is what I was told they were many years ago when I obtained them.

Thanks to Derick Pearson for dating this photo

Early 1900’s when this photo was taken of John and Alf Nicholson with their parents outside ’Bells Huts’, Mill Lane, Carlin How. These were dwellings erected after the mine was opened by Bell Brothers in 1973 to house miners (brought in to ease the scarcity of ironstone miners) near the allotment gardens. Peel & Jones foundry stood on the site of these huts. When first built one main tap outside in the middle of each row provided the water for the residents. Others were erected in the field below Carlin How (Duck Hole) Mine and som were being used in the early 1950s.

This photograph shows Charles Hall in the early 1900?s with his wife Margaret Elizabeth (ne Ord). They are in the garden of their house in Front Street, Carlin How where they were living at the time of the photograph. Also on the photograph I believe is their daughter Clara and her husband Fred Nicholson. The small boy is their son Lesley Nicholson. The two young ladies are I believe Emily Jemson behind Margaret and Mary Jemson (my grandmother) beside Charles Hall.

The title Nicholson Runner’s was attached to this image, but Tony Nicholson advised us: ”Fred Nicholson, my grandfather, is second from the right. He was a good mile runner and because of his dark complexion was nicknamed, ‘Darkie’ by the miners who used to bet on his races. I have a copy of this photo in our family archive, but don’t have any details of the other men. They may have been Fred’s brothers, but I’ve never heard them described as such. I suspect they were other members of the same local athletic club. My grandfather was born in the early 1880s, so I think this dates from the early 1900s.”
Many thanks to Tony for the update.

We can identify all the men in this photograph: George Rawson, Dennis Bowman, Rev. Johnson, Harry Dack, Mr Keen, Herbert Stephenson, Bob MacLean (foreman), Stan Downes, George Gettings, Arthur Ransome. They were in Skinningrove Square, where a church was to be built. They were undertaking voluntary work, but the project was stopped due to lack of money.
Arthur Ransome started work as a bricklayer at the Skinningrove Works when he was 14 in 1947, but left the works in the early 70’s when steel production stopped and continued as a bricklayer building many houses in the local area.

The bricks in front of them could be fire bricks that were used to line the furnaces, although the ‘brick gang’ would be called upon to carry out all kinds of building work.

Thanks to Derick Pearson and Philip Ransome for the information regarding this Skinningrove event.
