Loftus Outing

Loftus Outing

A nice photo of a group gathering. in 1910 at Loftus. However I know for certain that there are at least 5 people from Carlin How on the photo, so it may have been a mixed Chapel or church outing. Back Left is Leslie Nicholson (magistrate), 4th from left G T Goodwill. First on right in Middle row of adults is ? Hall. 5th from right in middle row is Mrs Goodwill.

The girls were reluctant to come forward so Ray Conn took the part of the Carnival Queen and the choir boys dressed up as attendants.

Mr. Lancaster, Marie Downs father, is the king.

The Biott Family – Carlin How

The Biott Family - Carlin How

A Picture postcard of the Biott Family in 1912, Kathleen Kelly great granddaughter of the Biotts tells us: ”The girl in the picture is Constance Irene L Biott, Charles  and  Annie Biott were her grandparents who raised her. Constance was  born in Carlin How in 1902. In the 1911 census It showed Annie Biott as age 67 who had 7 children 5 living 2 died . Charles Biott age 65, Fish merchant and they lived in Carlin How.”

The Biott family ran a Fish and Chip  business in a building adjacent to The Tivoli Theatre. Amazingly it survived unscathed when The Tivoli burned down! They must have achieved a measure of fame!

Thanks to Kathleen Kelly for the update.

Air Raid Wardens

Air Raid Wardens

A fine body of men, much maligned during those war-time years, pose in full uniform for a formal photograph.

Names, a place and a date would be much appreciated.

Miss Carlin How

Miss Carlin How

This is a photo of Miss Carlin How on the 6th of August 1951. Miss Carlin How is Sylvia Conway. To Sylvia’s right on back row is Bob Welford the coalmans daughter, possibly called katura, little girl front left dont know, next right with glasses is Kathleen Welford another daughter of Bobs, next right back row not sure, little girl directly in front is Pat Pearson, to her right is David Husband and directly behind and between these 2 is Ronnie Gittings. To Davids right front row is Alfie Arnold and to his right Brian Husband, Davids twin brother who went to Australia many years ago. The tall lad on the back row is John Scott. Thanks to Frank Robson for the update.

These events like Gala day and Carnival Queen were generally held on the football field but hope someone can confirm this one as I don’t recognise the background with the house showing behind the fence to the left, although it could have been around no 13 or 14 Bells Huts where the foundry now is.

A Sunday School Outing

A Sunday School Outing

Pupils from the Carlin How Wesleyan Sunday School on their way to a picnic at Cragg Hall. The chapel was built in 1912. The two boys near the railings are looking a little miserable, maybe they don’t go to Sunday School but are wishing they did.

c1909 shows the trip from Carlin How square. Note the front fences again. They are narrow Zig Zag rails.

Thank you Derick for dating this photo

Carlin How Square (1905)

Carlin How Square (1905)

This was the year that Albert Einstein published all of his famous works on relativity and also the year that the title of Prime Minister was created (not a lot of people know that!) – the band appear to be practicing, as there are not many onlookers. Derick Pearson has put these photos of parades in Carlin How Square in order for us and this is what he says about the one above.

”c1905… notice the White Pit Chimney in between the houses down the road on the way out of the square to Loftus.  Note also on the FRONT fence of Front street (not the dividing ones) Just behind the band to the left, that they are narrow ZIG ZAG railings. Not straight wide ones. This will become relevant on the other photos.”

Thanks to Derick Pearson for the update and the image, which is a Richlou postcard. – John.

Parade in Carlin How?

Parade in Carlin How?

Boy Scouts, a lot of people in fancy dress and the band pose for a picture in Carlin How.

When was it and what was the occasion?

c1919. Taken from the upstairs in the Maynard arms. Note the upstairs’ windows on the shops to the seventh window again. This time all the shops below to the right are all joined up and belong to the SKINNINGROVE  AMICABLE INDUSTRIAL SOCIETY OF CARLIN HOW. Porritt’s shop was owned by the same company too.

Note also the railings on the Front fence of front street….They are now wide railed, straight up and down fencing. No ZIG ZAG rails in sight. This is odd as they were now back like they were when first built.

Note also that the third shop from the left is still T WEBSTER’s.  Note also the White mine Chimney has now gone.

Note pavements were fully flagged too.

Thanks to Derick Pearson for the dating of this photo and the new photo.
