A Digital Village Network – A Community Hub
Welcome to the new home of East Cleveland Online. Initially new community websites, organisations and projects are being hosted here such as Cleveland Ironstone Mining Museum & Skinningrove History Group – see the links on the right for up to date records. This webspace is hosted for 3 years and after that time the communities hosted here will collaborate to sustain the account. With, say 10 groups, the cost will be trifling.
ECOL began in 2004 with the Digital Discovery Project operated by Digital City, Teesside University and was later supplemented via the UK online SID project as well as UKOL Community Media Beacon. Through our partnership with Teesside University we have access to community learning resources as well as support for Social Enterprises and SME’s and unlimited learner resources through a Google Apps Education Edition.
A Digital Village is a space where a community expresses their identity though ICT and Digital Media. This may be from an artistic, heritage, or economic perspective or a mixture of all three. This can be done through poetry, digital stories, community newspapers online, image collections (old and new), audio (Internet radio, oral history), animations, video, and text. To engage in the activities the participants need to learn new skills and so the Digital Village also becomes a learning community. [ steve thompson ]
